Everyone is kind of trapped by the corporate control over the use of VRS (Voice Recognition Software) with EMRs.
I am a software engineer, also worked on VRS systems for robots back in 1992.
Here is what I tried for my wife's pediatric practice on her tablet PC. I bought Nuance's Dragon Naturally speaking Home version 11.0 from buy.com for $45.00 shipped.
I am using tablet PC and accessing AC using VPN. Dragon is installed on tablet PC. You start your AC and place the cursor in the appropriate box for your dictation. Start dictating, it works great!!
PS: When using any VRS like Dragon, one needs to have patience. It all works according to the instructions set it has and your STYLE of dictation. You also need to add new words to instructions set (Vocab) as you progress. It is like potty training a baby when it poops. It happens initially until it builds the vocab and understands only your voice for your profile. It takes nearly 2 to 3 months to build the vocab. I am using the same headset (mic) provided by Dragon in the box. Works great.
