Current ICD-9 is between 12,000-13,000 codes. ICD-10 will got to about 69,000 codes that start with a letter and have up to 7 digits. The manual is being rewritten next year so don't waste money on it. There are good FREE downloads from from CMS that explains it. Looks crazy to start with but it actually makes some sense when you look at it further. My independent chart reviewer is great and spent about 1/2 hour with me on this as I asked her. The manual is 10,000 pages so don't try to print it. They have a conversion for current codes and have expanded some areas and condensed others (ex: HTN).
