Vicki, there are many ways to make emoticons and smiley faces. The easiest is to just learn the characters to type for instance a colon with a right parentheses next to it will give the default standard smiley
But, my guess is you are just writing your replies in the box below the comment above. This is the equivalent of a Quick Reply, which is a bare bones reply field. If you choose "Reply" on the comment you are posting about or Switch to Full Reply Screen in the actual window, you will then be presented with multiple options to spice up your post. If you click on the Smiley Face at the top left of the taskbar in the full reply window, it will give you a Smiley palette if you will to choose from.
