Long story short...had to print a chart out for a life insurance record request. They wanted EVERYTHING. Had to print the entire record and count the total pages by hand...notified the requester of the total page count and retrieval fee and they faxed over a notice to cancel the request AFTER I'd already printed the chart. Question: Is there a way to get a total page count for a chart in AC which would include imported items so I don't have to waste time and resources like this again? Thanks.

Hi Trista,
Our practice has a template that we use to "guesstimate" the number of pages. Visits: ______ x 2 ________ pgs Labs: ______ x 2 ________ pgs Imports: _____ x 2 ________ pgs Billing: _______ x2 _________ pgs Immunizations: _____ 1 page
We count all of the encounters, imports and labs and then multiply them by 2, because usually they are 2 pages long, and then come up with a total that way. I know its not an exact science, but it does beat printing everything and counting it manually.
Hope this helps!

Hi Trista,
Lets assume you are using the "Formal Health Record" for printing the records (and if not, you should as that will print all encounters for you). When doing this, you will have the option to either "Print" or "Print Preview". If you use "Print Preview" it will show the page count on the top of the page. The only thing it will not show is imported items if you need to print those as well.

Yes, I utilize the Formal Health Record option when printing the office notes since that is the most succinct option. The imported items is the problem area. I just discovered that if I open the Imp. Items section and click the Adobe PDF option instead of print in each item, it will show me the page count, including any cover sheets and Updox pages, so I could always add the pages up that way I guess.

Bert has a cool system for this. With Adobe Acrobat or Foxit Phantom, you can actually just right click and combine all the PDF files into one big file. That'll put the notes and attachments in one big document which can be burned to disc/printed/transferred. You'll also see the total page count.

The problem is the the II, which I don't use anyway. But, most people do. So, I just print to PDF and combine everything. That will give me the count.
As to the II, you can check properties of the folder, and it will give you the number of files and size. The problem is it could be one file. Which is one PDF, which is 500 pages.
In our state, you can charge by the first page, and then so much for the test up to a certain maximum. But, the law actually requires physicians to charge by the time if it is done digitally. They don't specify how to do that so I just charge a certain amount based on my salary. If a staff member does it, I charge less. 500 pages takes me 15 minutes and 5,000 pages takes me 15 minutes. The only difference is I charge more if it is a transfer especially if I charge so I can delete unneeded pages, make sure there isn't another patient in the record and put everything right side up.
I am the selected person for the human genome project for passive-aggressive. I charge most patients for transfer of records. Unless for moving or sending for consults, of course.

More often, insurance companies want records from a specific date range.
How can we easily print formal health records between an interval of time?
