Does anyone have any experience with installing Windows xp embedded or other embedded system and running it in the office or using in remote office I have this on thin clients Can AC be installled over it ? How does it install on an existing Xp machine? It has support till 2017 and you do not have to turn your office inside out with hardware, and possible a free cardiac stress to the practice doctor

XP Embedded is not really meant for typical practice usage. It's typically used on static systems with very light installations. For example, a POS/Register system at a convenience store. It lacks a lot of the user interface components and is difficult to update. For instance, you can't even update it without a WSUS server. Even if the support doesn't end til 2017, it's not worth the headache. It will be a very big pain updating and installing the components. You would easily lose any hardware savings to increased setup time/troubleshooting.
The new version of XP Embedded (Windows Embedded Standard 7) is also quite similar. Windows 7 has extended support until 2020. Windows 8 until 2023.

If you want to cut down on maintenance/installation, a terminal server might be the better option. The terminals can be used as thin clients for the new terminal server. You only have to update one computer instead of several. One good rule is that there should be no admins using it regularly.

I did that and got 4 of 6 computers switched to thin clients on terminal services. Was thinking about 6 xp machines and their functionality in secondary offices using remote desktop, but having a compliant os.

If you are going to use RDC and want to keep costs down consider ChromeBooks and the 2X app to connect. There are some limitations to the printing, but you can't beat the cost or the level of maintenance required. Jim[mie] has his ongoing Chrome Odyssey chronicles in another thread.

If the printing limitations are a no go, and you have no plans to run legacy apps on them (you can't do that with chromebooks anyway), then consider Surface RT tablets. All the remote desktop stuff is built-in and ready to go. You can get a tablet running Windows RT at Amazon.com for $284.00. You also get all the benefits of RemoteFX for things like better performance and USB Redirection. I have been using this for about 48 hours and getting the kinks worked out. I take the 14 inch chromebook (only have one) for 279 dollars which I use chrome remote desktop running my main computer which powers all my printers, so printing locally or through Updox has not been an issue.
I am going to replicate this in my other exam room but for 169 dollars I plug my chromebook into the 24 inch samsung TV and as I am working in the chart during exam mirror this on the TV. ( I just checked it is the 24 not 22 inch TV)--as I initially typed in.
If I need to stream any videos for teaching, I unhook my remote desktop and with the solid state drive the chromebook does this nicely without introducing malware or viruses into your system.
I am only using the singular chrome remote desktop so cannot speak about the 2x hookup.
I have not used the surface tablet either, but saw James' at Laramie and it looked pretty slick.
Good luck on finding what works best.

Jim, Don't confuse James' SURFACE PRO with Surface RT, they are different animals. James would not have anything but the best and most powerful! Above, he is referencing a Windows tablet running RT, not Windows 8.

Playing we are.
I never even thought of this but just saw a patient for externa otitis and while looking at his ear, was going to go look at my chromebook, and there staring at me was his 24 inch chart with his allergies and meds, so it is a bit fun to realize shortcuts not intended or thought about.

Donna, Thank you very much for coming in and clarifying. You are quite correct that my Surface is the most expensive one sold. Most here would not need to drop that kind of coin since they aren't planning on running full visual studio or big apps like that on a tablet. Jimmie, The hardware of the Surface RT for just under $300 is just as nice as the hardware for more expensive one. The difference is process, HDD size, and RAM. For the differences between the versions of Windows 8, see below: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-rt-faqJamesNT

You could reformat the computers with Ubuntu or some other Linux Distro (Xubuntu) and install Remmina. Remmina is an RDP Client for Linux.
