Thought I would get some views and maybe some poll input on a subject of mine. Of message boards that give notification via email when a post has been made on a thread you have taken part in, there are two types. The opt in and the opt out. We currently have an opt in system. This means you must manually and actively click on a setting so that this message board alerts you about a reply. This is true even if you started a thread. With an opt out, you would receive a notification that someone posted in a thread you were interested in without doing anything. You would, of course, have the option of opting out by clicking on a similar setting.

No matter how hard I try, I continue to forget to set the thread to notify me. I then have to go through the whole board looking for threads I have posted in. For me, it would seem rather obvious that if you took the time to post in a thread, you would be interested to know if others had either replied to your post or continued to add intersting opinions. I would love to hear your thoughts, and I will start a poll. Thanks.

I don't set the notifications...guess I just try to check in often enough. There are times it would be nice, but I'd rather be able to opt in manually. But then, I don't post as often as others...(I've dropped down to 8th!)

Thanks for asking.

Thanks for the honesty. But, this is a great example of the notification feature. I was able to see your post rather quickly and post back.

But, imagine posting somewhere and making an important comment or thinking that you really like the thread, but of course you get busy and forget you even posted there. Being notified kind of says, "Hey Rainy, this is the great AC message board notifier. Someone just gave a superbly and insightful comment on a thread you were interested it. These tells you two things:

1. Someone just gave a superbly and insightful comment....

2. That it probably came from Roy, Paul or Brian and not from Bert, lol.

I've never tried the auto-notification feature before. I'll have to give that a try!

Bert,

I hear exactly what you are saying. And in fact, I do use the feature on another board that is extremely active...threads fall off the first page in a matter of hours - without it, I'd never find responses. On the other hand, it results in lots of email.

Too much email is also not a good thing. Heck, in the office, I close the email program altogether and only log in a lunch or at the end of the day. This Gemini is easily distracted! blush

Balance she seeks....

I suppose. I use a lot of rules so that AmazingCharts email goes to one folder automatically and my Grammar board email goes to another and, finally, my Experts-Exchange to another.

To each his own. I am a big proponent of options. For instance, it would be nice if I could have it on by default, while you could have it off by default. Of course, even if it were on by default, you could turn off as I have to turn it on.
