Hey everyone,

I was looking at the requirements for AC when I found this:
Quote
Wired or Wireless?
While many of our clients use a wireless network without any issues, wireless connections may cause slowness and connectivity issues even when configured correctly.

If configured incorrectly, PHI may be exposed, which means you are breaching HIPAA and have a lot of explaining to do.

Amazing Charts thus strongly recommends that all computers are hardwired to the Main ("Server") and that medical practices avoid running their EHR over a wireless networks.

Does anyone else know how to make their wireless HIPAA complaint? Support sent me to this website:

http://www.airtightnetworks.com/hom...hcare/hipaa-compliance-and-wireless.html

This has some ideas, but i was looking for an exact "what-to-do".

Thanks!

Ben

All this HIPAA angst is unnecessary IMHO. But I guess the AC website has to say that for public consumption. I just have a WPA2 encryption with a password limited to me and the office manager. The two of us set up all the wireless units before turning over to staff to use, who have their own password at the OS login level.

It basically says don't use WEP (Use WPA2/Personal/AES) Encryption or an external RAIDUS server (WPA2/Enterprise, can be installed on server 2008). Hide the SSID or name of your network meaning if someone searches for your network it doesn't show up. it also says filter MAC addresses, which means even if person A manages to somehow find your network and know your password, he wouldn't be able to login with his or her machine since it'd get blocked for not having the proper MAC address. The rest says log and document/tell your staff how to discern your network from fake networks. This configuration varies from router to router (/access point to access point).

A key point that Sandeep mentioned is filtering by MAC addresses. A lot of wireless systems are not setup for this. I think it's really important in the case of breech in password security.

I have a wireless access point that is only used for my wireless phone. However it's setup just like Sandeep talks about. Good tips.

Thanks guys! I need to make sure i hide my SSID and use mac address filtering.

My router has a "Guest SSID and Main SSID" is it ok to leave the guest SSID for outsiders?

Also how do i extend our network to the front of the office. It has very week reception. I thought adding a access point would do it, but then its like a separate network. How do i use the same one all over on the office?

Thanks!

Ben

OK, for you techies, this is probably easy to answer, but, if you hide your SSID address, how do you link into it if you want to add a new wireless computer?

My networking skills are obviously very limited. blush

I'm not a techie but get a wireless signal booster like THIS

I am not advocating this brand, but the pictorial at the bottom of the page is helpful in understanding the concept.

You can specify the network when setting up the wireless settings. If you tell it that DocWire is the network it will find it even though the SSID in not active. The problem I have with this is my iPhone is not that smart, it needs to actually see the SSID.

If the signal is weak, best practices would be to use wireless access points. It certainly doesn't have to make a new network. If it has DHCP, turn it off.

What do you mean by leave the guest SSID for outsides? Who would be the outsiders? Are you saying you would allow outsiders to access your network?

You could turn on the Guest SSID. It's like having 2 LANS on one device (VLANs). Though I doubt the configuration options are robust. You could use the second network for guests.

What's the router/access point you currently have?

I believe you are able to manually type in the network name on an iPhone.

$5 bucks to the first one to figure out what the above binary code says.....not really $5 bucks. But you get $5 worth of bragging rights!
