Hey hey Bert, or whoever else would like to chime in. I finally got my server and computers built and installed Windows 7 on the clients and SBS2008 on the server. Two questions:

1) I have 6 gigs of RAM on the server, is this enough for some sweet speed or should I go up to 12 or higher? Bert I'm sure you probably have like one Terabyte of RAM that is being cooled by liquid nitrogen, but come on... lol

2) Do you know of any good online resources dealing with SBS and how to set it up and how to take advantage of all of the sweet things it can do?

If I may chime in....

Scott,

SBS 2008 is a very nice offering from MS in that you get all the big Enterprise stuff for far less than the Enterprise price. However, managing SBS does require several skillsets. If you truly wish to wrap your head around this wonderful product, I recommend your taking the time to dig your eyeballs into this book:

Windows Small Business Server 2008 Unleashed

You can find that book here: Book

There is a lot to know about SBS 2008 and I'm afraid asking a few questions on a forum or surfing a few blogs/articles about how to install it simply isn't going to get you what you want. Furthermore, most of the online resources, such as blogs and so forth, typically deal with one-off situations - such as what to do when so-and-so error occurs. Rarely will an online resources carry you through the entire experience of whatever product you are talking about and teach you everything you need to know.

Incidentally, 6G of RAM should be enough for a network of 10 or fewer users.

I went through this learning curve a few months ago. I found the checklists by SBS bloggers most useful in installing and initial tuning of SBS (although I have two SBS2008 books as well as ones on Exchange Server, Active Directory, and Security for quicker reference). I currently use RWW (instead of LogMeIn) almost daily to do my charts from home. I have parked my policies and procedures on CompanyWeb, and all staff use the internal email server instead of yahoo and pegasus. I rotate two terrabyte USB drives for off-site backup. I have no experience with terrabytes of RAM, but 8GB was enough for my clinic of up to 15 clients without straining resources. I do have liquid nitrogen and pour it every now and then onto the server room floor to see the mushroom cloud effect.

Thanks guys! I'll get the book for sure. Jack, do you have a copy of that checklist you were talking about or a link to the blog?

I'm probably going to set up an exchange server as well. I've done a Pegasus server in the past and it wasn't too bad. I take it that I will probably need a static IP address to do that right?

I have a word document with compiled lists and links for the initial install, including teaks and avoiding pitfalls. Too large to paste here, and hyperlinks don't paste anyhow. PM me with your email and I will email it to you.

Only 20GB of RAM, but I got an incredible deal.

RWW, Sharepoint, Exchange are all incredible and come with the deal.

I only have one thing to offer, but I highly recommend it:

TrainSignal DVD courses. There is one for SBS 2008, and there is something about following along as the instructor demonstrated from start to finish.
