Hi-despite sharing the folder and drive where the database is on my desktop, my laptop cannot access it. The wireless network works otherwise and AC is not firewalled. I have spent a lot of time with tech support on this. They mentioned that it's because my IP address on my desktop is dynamic (true) vs static. I have tried to change my address to static on my router (Belkin N1) with some difficulty. Does anyone have any ideas? Does this require port configuration? Both desk and laptop running 4.072--only 2 computers in the network. thanks

What happens if you plug your laptop into the back of the modem/router where the other computer is plugged in ? Does this get rid of the problem ?
I do not have a static IP address, but hated wireless. Other question is why are you on 4.072 ? Even if you are not ready to go to 5 you should be on the current version 4 (assuming you have paid maintenance).

I do have the maintenance but I thought 5 was beta. Tech upgraded me to 4.072-not sure how to get latest version, but I'll look around. I'll try the laptop plug-in....thanks

ariel,
Many users have dynamic IPs from their ISPs. Static has many advantages, but it shouldn't cause your problem. You can't just CHANGE your router to be static. You have to purchase static IP addresses from your ISP.
It may not be the laptop that isn't connecting. It sounds as if it is networked properly. It may be that you, as the user, do not have the correct permissions to access the folder. But, if it isn't on a domain, then permissions may not come into play. I'm too tired right now.
Steven has a good idea. Try to get all the variables out of the picture and connect directly to the router or switch.

You should be able to use the HELP - check for updates from main AC program page. It should then allow you to download 4.073. This may not do anything.
Let us know if plugging it in works. I use a P2P network and my question is can you use Winows Explorer on your laptop and view network drives and actually find the AC folder on your main machine...... Next question if you can do that is do you get an error when AC boots - you should be able to manually reset the paths on the laptop and then when it asks you to search you should be able to bring up the network folder.

Hello--thanks. Was able to see the network drives and locate the ac folder on the main machine. Got error repeatedly, reset the paths repeatedly, no go. Using win xp pro on both machines.

They should have gone over this, but when you clicked sharing on the main AC folder, did you give approval to allow others to change your files?
One time I noted it was set to read only and had the same problem. I think they ask you to run it as administrator once, not sure what this does, but it can't hurt.

What error were you getting? Was it saying that amazing charts was not able to connect? One thing you can do to make sure that permissions is not the cause, is to set the permissions on the database files themselves to everyone with full control. If this does not work, email me at Joe@amazingcharts.com and I will log in with you to correct this issue.

Thanks-I got busy with other things. How do you set the permissions on the database files themselves?

Not sure why one would need to set permissions on the actual files, and you have few settings, but to answer your question, you right-click on the database, choose properties on the dropdown menu, and select security. You can then give permissions. Personally, I would never give my users full control of a folder -- only read/write. That's what permissions and servers are for. But, I suppose for troubleshooting, it's maybe a good place to start.
