Good points Indy. To reinforce that idea for Robbye, we do that too. We have a very large powerful UPS for the server, another very large one for the router/firewall, network switch, VoIP switch and VoIP power over ethernet.
We have small ones for all of our desktops. The laptops that I use in the rooms of course all have built in batteries.
While some UPS's will only power the equipment for 15 minutes, it protects us during those annoying power flickers that might last one second, and protects the equipment from power surges. They give us enough time to power down safely. Our UPS's are also configured to power down the equipment once battery is 5-10% remaining.
