Major problem:
I am using AC4beta, have Adobe 8 and 9 Standard/Pro on all of our office computers. When going to sign off labs, it forces Adobe to open ALL our labs, consults, Xrays in a separate window, bypassing the sign off window. You then have to click 4 times (OCR, Reading Order, PDF document, then 'Sign-Off' on empty screen) for each item. What used to take seconds now takes 10-15x longer and totally disrupts work flow.
I called to report bug and apparantly it is a known issue. AC4, the newest and best, only works with Adobe version 6 or earlier -- a very early product that we don't even have around nor have we for a few years!
Anyone have ANY work arounds? I do not know how motivated AC is to fix this bug, nor if they can, but it is a serious make or break issue for our group!
Any and all suggestions GREATLY appreciated and needed. I have emailed jon but no response yet. My docs and staff are ready to shoot me ;-(

As you wait for a fix, you can get Acrobat 6 on eBay for $40 (free shipping):

Bummer. The first version of Acrobat we bought was version 8. Guess we wont be installing V4 for awhile, because we use Adobe for a ton of stuff.
You could try associating adobe files to the reader. I haven't had this problem and I use a variety of adobe readers and one computer has adobe 7. Most of the time I create with either cute PDF or PDFredirect (the latter can batch files easily). Both work as "printers."
Adobe Reader works fine w/ V4
When I raised the issue of 3 party product dependency, with regards to MS-Office, Alborg said I was crazy
Why not use a product that creates and edits PDF files that does not require ANY pdf reader? That way you do not have the tech support headache of which version of Acrobat to support or not.
I use the PDF Component Library for .Net from

I don't think it was me...
The PDF Component Library for .net looks interesting! Sure beats having to work with Adobe.

A product that is built for wide commercial availability should have no dependency on another product over which they have no control.
Way back in the early 90's, there was a mantra amongst IT people that "DOS ain't done until Lotus won't run." Basically every time Lotus 123 put out an upgrade, somehow a few weeks later Microsoft would put out an "upgrade" to DoS which would "break" Lotus. Well we know what ultimately happened:
There was Lotus 123, Quattro Pro, and Excel. Today there is Excel
.tiff is another way to go as well, as this is the format we get directly from our fax machine.. altho i think ac opens it separately as well..
If you had an activeX plugin for viewing .tiff files in IE AC would open them in its window.
Guess we wont be installing V4 for awhile, because we use Adobe for a ton of stuff.
Ditto. My office also relies pretty heavily on the Adobe Standard that came with my scanner and I don't think I could do without it anytime soon.
I have standard on my desktop and home machines and both were working fine with version 4 until I installed the latest adobe updates... then I had the same issue of all imports opening in their own window. I uninstalled reader and reinstalled reader version 9 and it started working normally again. I think the catch is that I had reader originally on both machines and added standard later - AC likes reader. There is another thread on a similar issue even with the current version :

Okay, here is the fix! You need to configure Adobe Standar/Pro 8&9 under the setup assistand, screen 5/5, to open Adobe Documents in browser. Sometimes it comes preconfigured to do so, sometimes not. Reboot the computer after changes and all works well. Now I don't know how to markup the labs with comments when it opens up in the browser.
I use PDXChange Viewer outside of AC for most PDF work (such as removing pages and adding commentary) but have left the free Adobe reader (I think it is V8.xx) for inside viewing in ACV4 and it seems to be working fine. TIFF works well but it is problematic to be opening a new window each time you want to view an imported item.
