Is there a thought about having our data base "in the cloud". Instead of maintaining our records in our office, it might be better to have them on a central server so all we need is a computer anywhere and internet connection instead of maintaining our own networks. I remember a survey but at that time I was not in favor of it. However, it now seems like a good idea. Any thoughts???

For one thing, there would be a major issue with speed and reliability of your internet connection. In this area, it would never be a consideration.

Not my cup of tea, but would be nice to log in from anywhere. I am hoping for smart phone apps.

what if your network goes down? maybe we could have it both ways where we could use our network and have the data duplicated "in the cloud" so if the network went down we could rely on the "cloud" or vice versa. I use mobile me for my iphone and it is great. The use of "the Cloud" was just a thought or option

It's a very good thought. I am upgrading my server soon with some new hardware and updated operating system. One consideration I had discussed w/ my I.T. consultant was "cloud" technology. We decided that for this type of application (A.C.) that is so sensitive to database connectivity, speed and reliability of the internet connection is the rate limiting step. Thus I will move to the cloud yet.
However it's an option than many hospitals and larger clinics are doing for multiple reasons (probably a different thread topic).
I think though that we should all be constantly reviewing and evaluating the newer technologies. It doesn't mean we should always jump on the newest band wagon, however thinking about these issues and discussing them in this forum is so very helpful. Good post mzimring.
